Question by Meg Ryan: What eBook reader is recommended for renting college textbooks?
I’ll be entering college next month and I’ve been hearing it’s more affordable to get your textbooks electronically rather than getting the physical books themselves. From the Nook, iPad, Kindle, or whatever other eBook readers there are, what would you recommend the most?
Answer by accorn34
I would totally go with a Kindle. Amazon just launched their college textbook rental service.
Amazon has the best selection and features in my opinion.. and is growing faster than anyone else in the ebook market.
You can compare the different kindle models and get a good deal on a kindle 3 here:
I would totally recommend a 3g kindle. You can get one for just $ 30 more these days then the basic wifi model, and it allows you to use the web browser free anywhere vs just wifi hotspots.
I use mine to read blogs/news/facebook/email etc.
I purchased the 3g kindle before the special offer version was released but if I was doing it again I would opt for this one:
That model gives you the full 3g kindle for less, since it has minor ads in non critical areas.
From what I understand the ads are easy to ignore though since they are not on any main content.
Anyways good luck!

Students and parents looking for a leg-up on their SAT prep are in luck: Anthony-James Green, renowned SAT tutor and creator of the Teach Yourself the SAT system, has just released his book, 100 Minutes to 100 Points, to the public, and it can be downloaded without charge from his website.
The book’s promise is simple: if students can devote 100 minutes to read its content, they’ll improve by roughly 100 points on their SAT after their first pass. Green hopes the book will highlight the simplicity behind remarkable SAT score improvements.
“To get a really high SAT score, you only need to things: strategy and practice,” says Green of his techniques. “The problem is that there are countless strategies available online, very few of which are tested, and almost no universally agreed-upon system for putting them into practice. My book boils down my most essential strategy sets and practice techniques into a short, easy-to-understand guide that any student can use to see instant score improvements.”
Students and parents interested in downloading the book can do so here:
Green has made a name for himself as one of the most effective SAT tutors in the world. After tutoring over 330 students 1-on-1, Green has achieved an average score improvement of over 400 points – a number almost unheard of in the SAT prep industry. Green credits his system, rather than his teaching abilities, for his remarkable success.
“I’d love to believe that I’m some supernaturally gifted teacher, but that’s not really the case,” says Green. “My success with my students comes from one factor above all else: I’m obsessed with building systems. I can’t stand waste, ineffectiveness, and repeated actions, and I always strive to find the best way to do something, record it, and then improve from there. I’ve been perfecting my SAT tutoring methodologies over 10,000+ hours of observation and optimization, and my test prep system is a result of that labor. There are literally millions of ways to teach the SAT, but I’m confident that my way is best.”
Green is open about using his students as test subjects. When working with students, Green takes his previously most effective methods and introduces slight alterations, carefully tracking the alterations in student score improvements and sticking with the best alterations. He then repeats the process, looking not only at individual elements of his SAT program, but at their effect upon each other and the holistic results of his efforts.
“My Teach Yourself the SAT program is my exact, optimized program, and it’s available to the public for the first time ever. But if students and parents want a taste of what the program offers, 100 Minutes to 100 Points provides a free way for students to see only THE most powerful and simple elements of my program. Any high school student can spare two hours to improve his SAT scores, and this book is a great way to achieve that goal.”
Green also offers his book, Test Prep for Parents, on his site via the following URL:
Parents can use the book to learn more about the college process, the SAT’s interaction with it, and what they can do to help their children succeed.
Green’s release of the book comes as part of a larger effort to shine a light on his self-study SAT program, which has already achieved a student score improvement of over 380 points. Green’s confidence in his programs is evident from the guarantee he offers on his site:
“I can’t stand red tape and complicated guarantees, so mine is simple. If someone tries the program, and they haven’t improved by hundreds of points in 21 days or less, they get a full refund. No questions asked, no forms to fill, and nothing to mail back. No one offers a test prep guarantee like this because no one has a program that works this well. Period.”
Parents interested in acquiring the program for their children can do so for less than $ 400, which includes full access to Green’s program and three free SAT textbooks shipped directly to their door. The program can be accessed from any internet-connected device, and operates on any students’ schedule from anywhere in the world. If students don’t see enormous score improvements within 21 days, the free books are theirs to keep. The program also comes with both a long-term SAT program and a last minute SAT program, both of which are included in the purchase price.
Green is offering his free book for a limited time, and hopes that as many students as possible will benefit from its lessons.
Green currently lives between Los Angeles and New York City, where he tutors the SAT full time when not working on his SAT curriculum.

Stratford University, an accredited private university offering Associate, Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, as well as many non-credit workshops and courses at campuses throughout Virginia as well as in Baltimore, Maryland, has partnered with ED MAP, the leading provider of course materials management services, to implement a digital migration project using content from CourseSmart, a leading educational services platform and the worlds largest provider of digital course materials. This new agreement follows a successful pilot using ED MAPs services to provide CourseSmart eTextbooks to all students taking a graduate course in research methods.
ED MAPs course materials management services, combined with the adoption of CourseSmart digital course materials across the University, will both reduce Stratfords course materials acquisition costs and eliminate the costs of obsolete and old-edition print versions that they had incurred with their prior partner and its processes; CourseSmart is known for the breadth of its available digital textbooks with a catalog of over 40,000 titles from 50 publishers. This availability allows students to be provided with current editions and avoid the delayed shipments many had previously experienced.
In addition to utilizing ED MAPs project management services to facilitate the migration to eTextbooks, Stratford University is also utilizing an ED MAP-powered online Stratford-branded bookstore where students will finalize their course materials orders. This storefront will allow students to gain immediate access to their digital course materials, and also offers them an opportunity to purchase a print version of the textbooks. The combination of a streamlined ordering system and student choice creates a powerful student benefit. Further, with campus librarians no longer responsible for bookstore fulfillment activities, this new process will allow campus librarians to focus on more academically-relevant projects to benefit faculty and students.
Stratford Universitys Chief Academic Officer, Dr. James J. Flaggert, is excited by the change. Stratford University is acutely aware of the need to incorporate ways to reduce the cost of education while improving quality. Since Stratford provides all textbooks to students in a complimentary way we are interested in reducing our dependence on hard- or soft-cover texts, and migrating to eBooks. Previously we invested a large sum in creating large inventories of print book, storing them, keeping track of them and shipping directly to the student or requiring the student to pick-up their book in person. With ED MAP and CourseSmart we can better manage resources, have access to high quality authors, and increase our students exposure to the digital environment. To further reduce the cost burden on our students, we are also exploring economical ways to ensure our students have the appropriate computer device.
According to ED MAP President Kerry Pigman, ED MAP is committed to providing systems and support services to assist institutions with the process of managing course materials. We are pleased to have this opportunity to help Stratford University develop and start implementing a course materials strategy that will provide students with high-quality, technologically-advanced course materials while reducing their expenses, increasing efficiencies and allowing them to reallocate staff activities to better fulfill their academic mission.
Our top priority at CourseSmart has always been to provide access to affordable, high quality digital course materials that are streamlined into the student and faculty workflow, said CourseSmart CEO Sean Devine. After a successful pilot period, we are pleased to expand access to our digital course materials at Stratford University through ED MAP.

Question by elly ?: What to do with damaged university textbooks?
So the end of the school year is approaching, and I’m just organizing my dorm room right now. I was planning on reselling all my textbooks, but one of them is really badly water-damaged. I bought it from the bookstore at my college for $ 160, so I really hope I can get just a little bit of money back from it..
Is there any sites/places that are willing to buy damaged textbooks for a small price, or does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks
Answer by Michael
If it’s really trashed you won’t have too much luck, but Amazon usually gives better prices than my school’s bookstore…

Please arrive to the training at 9:30am for breakfast and check-in. The training promptly begins at 10:00am. Lunch is served at 12pm. Free parking is available in the rear of the museum.
Trainer: Dr. William Steele, PsyD, MSW
This is the first of the TLC core courses that will lay the foundation to help you understand the differences between grief and trauma and to see trauma as an experience rather than a diagnostic category. Learn how to become a “witness” to a child’s traumatic experience to best appreciate the intensity of the experience and the needs of the child; to see what he now sees as he looks at himself and the world around him. Video taped interviews will demonstrate how TLC’s evidence-based, structured sensory intervention process brings children relief from the terror of their traumatic experiences. This structured process is used in schools and agencies across the country and has been proven, via research, to reduce trauma-specific reactions across all three major sub-categories.
These materials may be purchased online from the TLC bookstore. (Click on "All Books & Tools").
OACCA trainees are eligible for a discounted Certification Online Exam fee of 0. When you complete the Level I or II series, simply call TLC at 877-306-5256 and ask to register for the exam at the Ohio discounted rate.
